We stumbled into this restaurant thinking we were at a different one. I’m so glad we stayed. The young man who recommended dishes was very attentive and wanted to make sure we enjoyed the dosa, which none of us had before. I also tried a mango lassi for the first time. Wow! And the butter chicken was some of the best I had ever had!

The food was excellent. We had the lamb korma and butter chicken. The meat was tender and the curry very flavourful. The garlic naan was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The onion bhaji was crispy but not too oily. The rice was also good and a very large serving—we got two serves for two people but would have been fine with one serve. The service was also excellent. There is table service and the servers checked up on us to make sure we were happy. I booked ahead requesting a wheelchair accessible table and they sat us at the table closest to the door with plenty of space and a chair already removed—excellent. They took our leftovers and packed them nicely then returned them in a paper bag. I ended up forgetting my handbag and the staff were quick to call me so I could come back and collect it. The meal was pricey but worth it. We had lots of leftovers which were enough for another meal altogether.

Truly one of the best Indian meals I've ever had, and I've eaten a LOT. The Butter Chicken was a particular hit - best ever IMO, and it's a high bar. The Lamb Rogan Josh had a good kick while not being overpowering with heat, and the Seekh Kebab (lamb sausage) had a sensational flavour balance - heat, savoury, seasoning and a little bit of sweet. The Dosa was also really excellent - nicely balanced and tasty with a great pancake. The staff are great and the setting is very pleasant. Overall it's just very high quality modern Indian. I'll be going back here again even though I'm not a local - the kind of place you'd go out of your way to have dinner.

Came here on the recommendation of a friend, I was delighted. The garlic naan was light and fluffy, crisp on the outside but soft and doughy on the inside with the perfect level of seasoning. The main meals were tender and flavoursome. The bite of fresh herbs like ginger in the chicken tikka made the meals very enjoyable. The service was warm and polite and the atmosphere calm and welcoming.

Here’s your personalised review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had a wonderful dining experience at Amara Indian Restaurant in Canberra. We ordered the butter chicken, chicken vindaloo, biryani, and kulfi — and every dish was outstanding. The butter chicken was rich, creamy, and packed with flavour. The chicken vindaloo had the perfect balance of heat and spices. The biryani was fragrant and cooked beautifully, with tender chicken and well-seasoned rice. To finish, the kulfi was smooth and refreshing — the perfect sweet ending to the meal. The food tasted authentic and freshly prepared, and the overall experience was fantastic. Highly recommend this place if you’re in Canberra and craving delicious Indian food. I’ll definitely be coming back!

The food was great. Tasty mango lassi, the goat curry was tender and the dosa was crispy with nice condiments. The staff here are friendly and helpful. I cannot speak on the food's authenticity but I loved it.

What a fabulous place to eat. The food and service were top notch. The recommendation by the waiter for the crepe starter was an excellent choice; tasty and different. Mains were plentiful and tasty. Highly recommended.

Amara Indian Restaurant in Canberra absolutely impressed me! Their Bangalore dosa is outstanding — crisp on the outside, soft inside, and full of authentic flavour. The accompaniments make it even better: the coconut chutney, potato curry, sambar, and the fragrant spice powder all come together beautifully. The palak pakora is just as memorable — light, crunchy, and perfectly seasoned without feeling oily. Their momos and prawn starter are also fantastic, packed with flavour and cooked perfectly. The staff were incredibly nice and helpful, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. You can really feel the warmth and care in both the food and the service. If you’re craving truly delicious South Indian food in Canberra, Amara is a must-visit!

Amara came recommended by my coworkers, and they were right to do so! I found the food to be very flavourful. Their herbs, spices, and masala are clearly deliberately selected to suit their menu. And their dosa was very, very good! I didn't find anything that I didn't love, and got to have a lovely, slow dining experience where I really took the time to enjoy the food! The owner/manager is a lovely conversationalist and eager to make sure you have a great dining experience, and knows the menu well.
